McClaren's side took an early lead at Selhurst Park yet immediately gave in, with poor protecting adding to an embarrassing thrashing against previous manager Alan Pardew's group.
The fans that had made trek to London could be heard thrashing the players from the stands, and the mentor has no apprehensions with their perspectives.
Whenever inquired as to whether the fans were still behind the group, McClaren said: "I can comprehend that after today, most likely not.
"They vented their dissatisfaction and frustration and outrage and rightly so. There's one and only gathering of individuals who can turn that around and it's us, the mentors and the players
"Just to say, were as frustrated and hurt and furious as them yet we must work it out and work it through and well do that."
With Sunderland overcoming Stoke 2-0, Newcastle slipped into the Premier League transfer zone.
